A New Kind of Requiem’. Helen Ottaway talks about nurturing seeds in music, performance and outdoor art to grow a new kind of Requiem. Illustrated with musical box miniatures and a portable sound installation. The musical box is hand-wound and acoustic; the sound installation consists of two very small battery powered loud speakers. placed in different parts of the space during the talk. The sound installation would also be available to occupy another space during the Borrowed Time Symposium – it ideally suits a corridor or passageway. Length of talk 20-30 minutes. Requirements – a table or stand for the musical box.
Speakers for this event
I am a composer, installation artist and curator who often works with other art forms and artists. These interactions with other disciplines and my encounters with composer and conceptualist John Cage in the 1980s have influenced the way I plan, composes and place my music. I creates sound installations and performances for indoor and outdoor spaces, sometimes involving the stretching of sound and music across urban and rural landscapes. Over the last 3 years I have been developing ideas and plans for a new kind of requiem, one that will encompass different areas of my practise - music - installation - outdoor art - as well as reaching into new ways of working. Particular areas that I am currently exploring are words and language - working with a number of different writers, and work involving walking. I have worked nationally and internationally for 40 years, commissioned by BBC, Salisbury Cathedral, Cork European Capital of Culture 2005 and The National Review of Live Art among others. I have had a number of associations with organisations: Artsadmin (associate artist 2007-13); Activate Performing Arts and Inside Out Dorset (associate artist); CDAS, Bath (speaker at the DDD14 conference), A Leap in the Dark Online Literary Forum (composer in residence) and walk-listen-create. I have found the support from these bodies, as well as fellow artists invaluable
